Asia Internet Coalition (AIC) has raised concerns over Pakistan’s proposed data localization regulations. A new report by the coalition warns that such measures could hamper economic growth, reduce employment, and stifle innovation.
The report estimates a potential GDP loss of USD 16.5 billion and job cuts of 3.2 million if the proposed Personal Data Protection Bill becomes law. It highlights increased costs, cybersecurity risks, and potential job losses due to data localization requirements.
While acknowledging the need for data protection, the AIC emphasizes the importance of a balanced approach that prioritizes economic growth and innovation. The report recommends a less stringent regulatory environment to avoid stifling the digital economy.
