Infinity Ward has confirmed a significant and long-awaited change in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4: the riot shield will be fully destructible. The shield, which has frustrated the Call of Duty community since its introduction in Modern Warfare 2 in 2009, has historically allowed players to turtle in corners, forcing opponents to rely on grenades or backstabs to eliminate them. In Modern Warfare 4, enemies will be able to break the shield outright if a shield user camps too long in one position, stripping the weapon of its greatest defensive strength and effectively ending the era of near-invincible corner camping that has plagued the series for years.
The destructible riot shield is part of a broader set of changes Infinity Ward is bringing to multiplayer and campaign alike. The Modern Warfare 4 campaign can be played completely offline, a direct response to the heavy criticism Black Ops 7 received for requiring an internet connection during its single-player story. The campaign brings back fan-favourite characters Captain Price and Ghost, who will navigate a global conflict sparked by North Korea invading South Korea. The return of these two iconic characters is expected to generate significant excitement among longtime fans of the series who had been hoping to see them again in a mainline entry.
On the multiplayer side, Infinity Ward is reworking movement mechanics and updating hip firing alongside a series of quality-of-life improvements that players have been requesting for years. The Ninja perk returns as a standard perk option. Map voting comes back, giving players a say in which battlegrounds they play. Theater mode makes its return, allowing players to record and review their matches. For PC players, shaders can now be compiled offline, addressing one of the most persistent technical frustrations that has affected the Call of Duty experience on personal computers in recent years. The game will also feature a completely new user interface with a left pull-out menu and a focus on verticality across the board, and changes to the Call of Duty companion application are also planned.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set to launch on October 23, 2026, and will also release day-and-date on a Nintendo console, marking a notable expansion of the franchise onto Nintendo hardware. Infinity Ward has so far remained quiet on whether Skill-Based Matchmaking will return in the new title, leaving that as one of the remaining open questions for the community ahead of launch. Early previews of the game have been described as considerably more positive than recent entries, with reviewers suggesting Modern Warfare 4 feels like a fresher and more considered direction for the franchise.
