Google is rolling out a new Quick Share feature that allows Android users to send files directly to iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers through a QR code, giving Android users a practical cross-platform file sharing option that works without requiring AirDrop compatibility or any dedicated application installed on the receiving Apple device. The feature was announced during The Android Show: Input/Output Edition and is currently rolling out to Android devices, with full availability expected within the coming month.

The process is straightforward for both parties. An Android user opens Quick Share, selects the files they want to share, and chooses the QR code option from the sharing menu. The receiving iPhone or iPad user then scans the QR code using the native Camera application, after which the files open through a private download link in the device’s default web browser, requiring no additional steps or third-party applications on the Apple side. Both devices need an active internet connection for the transfer to work, as files are uploaded to Google’s servers during the process. Google has confirmed that all shared files are end-to-end encrypted during transfer and do not consume any storage from the sender’s personal Google Drive account, keeping the feature entirely separate from a user’s cloud storage allocation.

The feature comes with clearly defined limits that users should be aware of before attempting large transfers. Up to ten gigabytes of files can be shared to iPhone, iPad, or macOS devices within any given 24-hour period, with a maximum of 1,000 files per session and the ability to send to as many as 20 Apple device recipients simultaneously. Files uploaded through the QR code method remain available for download for 24 hours before the private link expires, making it suitable for immediate sharing needs rather than long-term file availability. Google described the QR code option as a complementary fallback mechanism that broadens cross-platform sharing accessibility while the company continues to expand Quick Share’s direct AirDrop compatibility across a wider range of Android devices through a separate and more integrated pathway that bypasses the browser-based transfer entirely.
