Universal Service Fund (USF) has been busy expanding Pakistan’s fiber optic network. Since its inception, they’ve launched 26 Backhaul Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) projects across all provinces, investing over Rs. 35 billion in the process. This investment has resulted in a massive 18,571.68 kilometers of optical fiber being laid, significantly improving connectivity infrastructure nationwide.
Several provinces have seen substantial progress. In Punjab, six projects are already completed, with nearly 2,828 kilometers of OFC laid and 348 nodes established. Work continues on the remaining projects, with significant progress made so far this fiscal year. Sindh has a similar story, with four projects completed, over 3,783 kilometers of OFC laid, and 374 nodes established. Work on remaining projects there is also ongoing.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has kicked off six projects targeting over 3,475 kilometers of OFC. Two projects are already complete, with more than 2,045 kilometers of OFC laid and 108 nodes established. The remaining projects are underway.
Balochistan has also benefited from USF’s initiative, receiving seven projects with five already completed. These projects have laid an impressive 5,870 kilometers of OFC and established 103 nodes across 30 districts. Work is still ongoing on the remaining two projects.
USF’s investment is crucial for improving internet connectivity, especially in areas that haven’t had great access before. This expansion of the fiber optic network will play a key role in enhancing access to information, communication, and digital services across all of Pakistan.
