Bahria University Karachi Campus, known as BUKC, is establishing an Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence with the support of Meezan Bank Limited, according to an announcement shared by CSR Forum Pakistan. The center is intended to advance high-impact research in artificial intelligence, build closer cooperation between academia and industry, develop future-ready AI talent, and produce technology-driven solutions to emerging challenges across industries and society. Meezan Bank said its support reflects a commitment to education, technological advancement, and digital transformation in the country.
The announcement did not specify the size of the contribution, the opening date, or the research areas the center will prioritise, so those details remain to be confirmed. What it does set out is the overall purpose, which follows the pattern of university centers of excellence elsewhere: bringing together faculty, students, and industry partners to work on applied problems, train a skilled workforce, and test ideas that can move from the laboratory into practical use. Bahria University already runs a Center of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence at its Islamabad campus, which opened in 2022 and works across machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, robotics, and related areas, so the Karachi center adds a second base for AI work within the university system and one located in the largest commercial city of the country.
For Meezan Bank, the support builds on an existing interest in artificial intelligence. In December 2024 the bank announced a partnership with Ekkel AI to launch a generative AI initiative intended to improve banking operations, raise employee productivity, and personalise services across its digital platforms. Backing a university research center gives the bank a link to the pipeline of graduates and research that will be needed as banks adopt AI for tasks such as customer service, fraud detection, credit assessment, and compliance. Industry funding of this kind is also common for centers of excellence, since it can help provide laboratory equipment, computing resources, scholarships, and research projects that are difficult to finance from university budgets alone.
Karachi is home to the head offices of most of the country banks, telecom operators, and many software and fintech companies, which makes the city a natural place for an AI research center that wants to work with industry. If the center develops partnerships with local firms, students at Bahria University Karachi could gain access to internships, live datasets, and joint research projects, while companies gain access to talent and expertise. The announcement presents the center as a step towards a more innovative and digitally capable Pakistan, and further details on its programmes, leadership, and timeline are expected to be shared as the center is set up.
