WhatsApp Now Uses Address Book Photos To Identify Contacts Without Profile Pictures

WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that allows users to identify contacts in their chat list even when those contacts have not uploaded a profile picture on the platform. The Meta-owned messaging application is introducing an address book profile photo fallback mechanism that automatically pulls images saved in a user’s phone contacts and displays them in place of the default blank placeholder, making conversations visually easier to navigate without requiring any action from the contact themselves.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature builds upon a previous addition introduced in beta version 25.21.10.74, which allowed users to import their own profile photo from Facebook or Instagram. The new rollout extends this personalisation further by drawing on locally stored contact photos to fill the gaps left by contacts who have chosen not to set a WhatsApp profile picture. The behaviour works differently depending on the context. For a user’s own profile, if no WhatsApp photo has been uploaded, the image saved in their device’s contact card will be displayed, but only to themselves, with other users continuing to see the standard placeholder unless they have independently saved a photo for that contact on their own device. For contacts whose profiles are privacy-restricted and therefore not visible, WhatsApp will substitute the photo saved in the viewer’s address book, ensuring recognition remains possible even when privacy settings would otherwise obscure the contact’s image entirely.

Contacts who have never uploaded a WhatsApp profile picture will no longer appear as faceless entries in chats or group conversations for users who have their photos saved locally. Should a contact later choose to upload a WhatsApp profile picture and set it to visible, the platform will automatically replace the address book photo with the official one, keeping the experience consistent and current without requiring manual updates. The feature is currently available to beta testers running the latest iOS build through TestFlight, with some App Store users also expected to receive early access as WhatsApp collects broader feedback ahead of a wider rollout. The update represents a meaningful step toward making WhatsApp chats more personal and immediately recognisable without placing any obligation on contacts to change their privacy preferences or upload new content.
