WhatsApp Beta Adds Forward Count Feature For Channel Updates

WhatsApp is expanding the tools available to channel admins with a new forward count feature that helps them track how their updates are shared across the platform. Currently rolling out to selected users on WhatsApp beta for Android, this feature provides a numerical indicator of how many times a post has been forwarded, offering admins deeper insight into their content’s reach and shareability. The forward count appears below each update, alongside emoji reactions and the forward button, but it is only visible to admins, not followers.

The rollout, available in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.4.11, reflects the company’s efforts to give content creators actionable metrics while keeping the overall user experience unchanged. Admins can now see which posts resonate most and are being shared beyond the channel, allowing them to optimize updates for maximum engagement. Each forward indicates that the content reached new chats and groups, effectively amplifying its visibility without breaching individual user privacy. WhatsApp emphasizes that forwards remain protected by end-to-end encryption, and the platform cannot see who shared a message or where it was sent. Instead, it counts the total number of recipients, including multiple forwards in the same chat only once, and stores this number on its servers for the forwarded statistic.

This development follows earlier reports suggesting that WhatsApp is also experimenting with a view count feature for channel updates. That functionality remains under testing, with potential options including showing view counts only to admins or making them visible to followers as well. WhatsApp has not confirmed which display approach it will ultimately adopt, indicating the company is still refining how performance metrics will be presented while balancing privacy considerations.

At this stage, the forward count feature is limited to a small subset of beta testers who have installed the latest version from the Google Play Store. The company plans to expand availability gradually if initial testing goes smoothly, allowing a broader base of channel admins to benefit from these insights. By providing both reactions and forward statistics, WhatsApp aims to give content creators a clearer understanding of audience engagement, helping them craft updates that are both relevant and shareable, while maintaining the platform’s strong focus on privacy and security.

This enhancement aligns with WhatsApp’s ongoing strategy to support creators and admins without changing the fundamental nature of messaging on the platform, and it may serve as a model for future updates that provide actionable data while keeping user activity private.
