Cellular mobile operators have significantly upgraded network infrastructure in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), bringing widespread high-speed 4G broadband coverage to these remote northern regions. Despite the challenges of difficult terrain and severe weather conditions, companies managed to complete upgrades on nearly 90% of network sites, a rollout milestone that fulfills obligations set by PTA during earlier spectrum licensing agreements. The completion of these upgrades is considered a major step in reducing the connectivity gap faced by residents in these underserved mountainous areas.

The expansion of 4G services in AJK and GB is expected to directly impact social and economic development by enabling faster and more reliable digital access for local communities. With improved coverage, residents will have better opportunities to engage in e-commerce, participate in online education, benefit from telehealth initiatives, and leverage digital platforms to support businesses. Officials have emphasized that enhanced connectivity also plays an important role in strengthening tourism in the region, as travelers increasingly rely on mobile broadband for navigation, bookings, and sharing experiences. This progress closely aligns with the government’s broader digital agenda, which seeks to extend inclusive connectivity across the country and ensure no region remains digitally isolated.

According to PTA, all major operators have rolled out 4G mobile broadband services across AJK and GB by activating upgraded sites and meeting their mandatory license requirements. The 2021 spectrum auction had specifically included coverage obligations in these territories, ensuring operators committed resources to extend services beyond urban centers into areas that traditionally struggled with reliable access. The fulfillment of these conditions not only addresses long-standing demands of residents for dependable internet but also represents an important achievement in Pakistan’s digital development journey. PTA continues to monitor the rollout closely, particularly in areas where harsh weather conditions and geographic barriers make service delivery more complex.

Industry experts note that deeper penetration of 4G networks in these northern regions will contribute to greater digital inclusion by giving people access to the same tools and opportunities as those available in more developed urban areas. Stronger connectivity is also expected to empower local entrepreneurs, improve trade links, and encourage adoption of digital platforms that can generate income streams for communities. With operators continuing to invest in next-generation mobile technologies, there is also optimism that the long-term impact will include stronger integration of AJK and GB into Pakistan’s growing digital economy.
