Sony Limits PS5 Disc Drive to One Per Order Amid High Demand

Sony has imposed a one-unit-per-order limit on its standalone PS5 Disc Drive accessory through the PlayStation Direct online store, citing high demand for the restriction while declining to provide further detail on what is driving the surge in purchases or how long the limit will remain in place.

The PS5 Disc Drive is the only way for owners of the PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro to play physical game discs and Blu-ray movies, making it a critical accessory for buyers who prefer physical media or who have accumulated existing disc-based game libraries. In addition to the single-unit purchase cap, Sony has also indicated that additional household limits may apply, suggesting the company is taking a multi-layered approach to managing the demand imbalance rather than relying solely on the per-order restriction.

The timing of the purchase limit is notable given that Sony recently announced it will stop producing physical discs for all new PlayStation games starting in January 2028, after which all titles released on the platform will be available exclusively in digital format through the PlayStation Store and authorised digital retailers. Games released before that cutoff will continue to be sold on disc, but the announcement effectively places a countdown on the relevance of disc drives for new software going forward. Sony attributed the decision to shift toward all-digital distribution to changing consumer preferences, citing digital purchases significantly outpacing physical game sales across its platform.

The apparent contradiction, high demand for a disc drive accessory precisely as Sony prepares to phase out physical media, likely reflects a combination of factors including players stocking up ahead of anticipated scarcity, buyers seeking to preserve access to their existing physical libraries, and consumers who remain committed to physical media for reasons including resale value, ownership rights, and offline access. Whether Sony’s plan to end physical disc production for new titles from 2028 will ultimately reduce demand for the accessory, or whether it will continue to be sought after for pre-2028 disc collections and Blu-ray playback, remains to be seen as the platform’s all-digital transition approaches.
