The Punjab government has formally launched its electric bike sharing project in Lahore under the Green Mobility Initiative, signing off on a private-sector-financed scheme that will deploy 50,000 electric bikes across the city over the next 18 months without placing any direct financial burden on the provincial treasury.
A signing ceremony for the project was held at the Civil Secretariat in the presence of senior government officials, formalising arrangements for what is set to become one of the largest app-based electric micro-mobility services in the country. The entire project will be financed through private investment of Rs. 8.1 billion, a structure that allows the provincial government to offer a public transport service without committing public funds, while giving the private operator a commercially viable framework to recover costs through user fares and subscription models over time.
The first phase of the rollout will see 10,000 electric bikes deployed alongside 1,500 smart docking stations installed at key locations across Lahore, with subsequent phases expanding coverage to reach the full 50,000-bike fleet. The service will operate through a dedicated mobile application with Global Positioning System-based tracking built in, and a battery-swapping mechanism will be used instead of conventional charging to ensure continuous availability of the bikes without extended downtime. Users will be required to verify their identity through their Computerized National Identity Card before accessing the service, providing a registration layer that links each user to their account and maintains accountability within the system.
On the fare structure, users will pay Rs. 25 for the first kilometre and Rs. 15 for each additional kilometre, a pricing model that positions the service as an accessible option for daily commuters, students, and workers travelling short to medium distances within the city. Authorities said the initiative is expected to reduce carbon emissions, ease traffic congestion, and provide a meaningful alternative to private vehicles and petrol-powered two-wheelers for the portion of Lahore’s urban trips that fall within manageable cycling distances.
