The Punjab government has announced a new electric bike scheme specifically designed for teachers across the province, extending the Chief Minister’s E-Bike initiative to the education workforce as part of a broader effort to address daily transportation challenges faced by educators while simultaneously advancing the province’s electric vehicle adoption agenda. Applications for the scheme will be invited through the Punjab Teachers Foundation website, with eligible teachers able to apply online by submitting required documents including a Computerised National Identity Card, a service certificate, a driving licence, and a passport-size photograph.
Under the scheme, e-bikes will be priced between Pakistani Rupees 200,000 and Pakistani Rupees 250,000, with the provincial government offering a subsidy of 30 to 40 percent on each unit, meaningfully reducing the upfront financial burden on teachers who opt to participate. The remaining amount after the subsidy deduction can be paid through easy instalments spread over two to three years, with monthly payments expected to range from Pakistani Rupees 3,600 to Pakistani Rupees 4,200, a figure designed to be within reach for teachers across different pay scales in the province’s public education system.
The application process has been kept largely digital. After submitting applications online, candidates will receive confirmation through a message or email, and attested receipts for the bikes can also be downloaded directly through the application portal, reducing the need for in-person visits or manual paperwork. The scheme mirrors the structure of similar electric bike initiatives the Punjab government has extended to other segments of the workforce, including students and lower-grade civil servants, reflecting a consistent policy approach of using subsidised instalment access as the primary mechanism for expanding electric vehicle ownership among salaried public sector employees.
The initiative fits within both the province’s teacher welfare framework and Pakistan’s accelerating national push towards electric vehicle adoption. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently directed that government employees up to Grade 16 be provided electric bikes on easy instalments at the federal level, while the national electric vehicle policy targets 30 percent electric vehicle penetration within five years, with projected fuel savings of USD 4.5 billion. Punjab’s teacher-focused scheme adds another concrete demand-side measure to that national trajectory, channelling electric vehicle uptake through one of the province’s largest organised professional communities.
