Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has directed authorities to deploy modern cameras equipped with artificial intelligence on motorways to track vehicles violating traffic and load regulations. The directive came during a meeting chaired by Khan focused on the National Highway Authority’s axle load control regime, where he also ordered officials to remove legal and operational hurdles within the framework within one week.
During the meeting, Khan directed officials to provide transporters with clearer guidance on vehicle structure and weight limits, while instructing authorities to identify factories that load excessive weight onto trucks and impose fines on them directly. He also ordered that freight vehicles be required to pass through weigh stations as a mandatory step, and directed officials to fully automate the weigh station system to reduce manual intervention in the enforcement process.
As part of the broader plan, Khan instructed authorities to establish weigh stations along GT Roads similar to those already operating on the country’s motorway network, extending the automated weighing infrastructure beyond motorways to other major transport corridors. Officials informed the meeting that authorities had recorded 30,000 axle load violations over the past six months, underscoring the scale of the problem the new measures are intended to address.
Khan also announced plans to personally visit ten locations along the motorway network to review how effectively the axle load regime is being implemented on the ground. Officials told the meeting that authorities are working to complete a modern weigh station in Sangjani built to international standards, which is expected to serve as a model facility once operational. The combination of AI powered monitoring cameras and automated weigh stations reflects a broader push to reduce manual enforcement and close gaps that have allowed overloaded and rule breaking vehicles to avoid detection on the country’s highway network.
