The Murree district administration has received 15 modern green electric buses under the special directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, with the fleet set to serve both local residents and the large number of domestic and foreign tourists who visit the hill station throughout the year.
Deputy Commissioner Murree Agha Zaheer Abbas Shirazi announced the handover while speaking to media, describing the initiative as a milestone in promoting eco-friendly and modern public transport in Murree. He said the induction of electric buses would significantly reduce carbon emissions and air pollution, helping preserve the natural environment of the hill station, which has experienced growing environmental pressure as annual tourist footfall has increased over recent years. The buses are equipped with modern technology to ensure a high standard of passenger experience, offering comfortable, safe, and affordable travel facilities for both residents and visitors.
The buses will operate on key routes including Jhika Gali, Patriata, Rawalpindi to Lari and Lawrence College, facilitating access to major tourist destinations across the hill station and helping reduce traffic congestion on routes that become particularly strained during peak tourism seasons. Electric charging stations will be established across Murree to guarantee uninterrupted service, ensuring the fleet can maintain continuous operations without the range limitations that might otherwise restrict deployment across the hill station’s varied terrain and altitude.
The Deputy Commissioner said the Punjab government continues to prioritise the development of Murree with a focus on modern urban infrastructure and environment-friendly initiatives, and described the electric bus project as a valuable asset for both the people of Murree and the visitors who contribute significantly to the local economy. The deployment extends Punjab’s growing electric bus programme, which has already introduced electric fleets in Lahore, Rawalpindi, and several other Punjab cities, into one of the province’s most ecologically sensitive and economically important tourism destinations.
