In cooperation with Nokia, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) successfully completed the nation’s first experiment of 1-terabit transmission capacity per wavelength.

The experiment was carried out in a live network setting where the PTCL Metro Transport Network was upgraded to 1-Terabit per channel, expanding its capacity to extremely high speeds of 32-Terabit per fibre. The study was based on Nokia’s Photonic Service Engine Transport Technology, which was created to increase network capacity and offer quicker, greater bandwidth for improved customer experiences.

This pilot transformation will enable the transport network for emerging technologies while opening up new business options for both individuals and companies. This is yet another step in PTCL’s plan to get its network infrastructure ready to handle the increasing data traffic demands of high-speed services and bandwidth-hungry applications, such as Ultra HD video streaming, Industrial Automation, Smart Cities, and e-learning platforms for its subscribers and enterprise clients.

From the perspective of a customer, 1 Terabit per second of bandwidth is sufficient to concurrently handle 300,000 HD video zoom calls and to download the complete HD season of Game of Thrones in less than 2 seconds.

Chief Technology Officer at PTCL Group, Jafar Khalid, stated, “We are committed to digitising our client experience by offering cutting-edge technologies. Due to the increasing demand for data traffic from both business and consumer groups, we evaluated the scalability and development of our optical transport network by increasing the current capacity to 1 Terabit per channel. We have tested bandwidths up to 1 Terabit thanks to Nokia’s cutting-edge technology and expertise, which will help us deliver a better customer experience and enable smooth future development of our transport network capacity throughout Pakistan.

“This new experiment with PTCL is just another witness to further strengthening our long-term collaboration,” stated Imran Durrani, Customer Team Head for PTCL Group at Nokia.

As data consumption continues to grow quickly, PTCL is able to boost network capacity cost-effectively thanks to our leading optical technologies, such as Photonic Service Switch and Photonic Service Engine.

To give people and businesses quick and dependable network access, PTCL can update and upgrade its optical network thanks to our ground-breaking Flexgrid design.

PTCL aims to provide its clients with better service quality, quicker speeds, and the ability to create a network design that is more straightforward and boosts operational effectiveness.
