Pakistan’s telecom sector maintained steady expansion during fiscal year 2024 25, with total subscribers crossing the 200 million mark and broadband connections exceeding 150 million, according to the latest Annual Report released by PTA. The report highlights continued growth across mobile, broadband and digital services, supported by network expansion and improving infrastructure coverage. It reflects how rising demand for connectivity, combined with policy stability, has helped the telecom industry strengthen its position as a key contributor to the national economy and digital development.

According to PTA data, telecom operators generated revenues of more than Rs 1 trillion during the year, registering a 12 percent increase compared to the previous period. The sector also contributed Rs 402 billion to the national exchequer, underlining its role as a major source of government revenue. Investment activity remained robust, with total foreign and local investment reaching $838 million, reflecting a 9 percent year on year increase. PTA attributed this performance to continued network rollout, technology upgrades and supportive regulatory measures that helped maintain investor confidence despite broader economic challenges.

On the infrastructure front, the report shows that telecom services now cover around 92 percent of Pakistan’s geographical area, expanding access to remote and underserved regions. Broadband penetration crossed 60 percent, driven largely by mobile broadband adoption, while 95 percent of mobile networks have transitioned to 4G technology. This shift has significantly improved data speeds and service quality for users across the country. Internet usage also reached a new milestone, with total data consumption recorded at 27,727 petabytes during the year, highlighting the growing reliance on digital platforms for communication, entertainment, education and business activities.

The report also noted progress in strengthening Pakistan’s international connectivity, with the addition of four new submarine cables during the year. These cables are expected to enhance redundancy, improve network resilience and support rising data traffic by providing stronger links with global internet infrastructure. Improved international connectivity plays a critical role in ensuring service stability, particularly as demand for cloud services, video streaming and cross border digital platforms continues to increase.

Local manufacturing emerged as another positive area in the telecom ecosystem. PTA reported that around 95 percent of mobile phones sold in Pakistan are now manufactured locally, reflecting the impact of government incentives and industry participation. Smartphones accounted for 68 percent of locally manufactured devices, indicating a shift in consumer preference toward internet enabled handsets. This growth in local production has contributed to supply chain stability and has supported employment in the manufacturing segment, while also helping reduce reliance on imported devices.

In terms of service quality and user protection, the report highlighted improvements in Pakistan’s global cyber security ranking, supported by stronger regulatory oversight and awareness initiatives. PTA also reported a 13 percent reduction in consumer complaints during the year, attributing this decline to enhanced complaint resolution mechanisms and improved operator compliance. These measures have helped build greater trust among users while encouraging service providers to maintain higher standards.

Overall, the Annual Report presents a picture of consistent expansion across Pakistan’s telecom sector, with growth in subscribers, revenues, infrastructure and investment. The data underscores the sector’s role in expanding digital access, supporting economic activity and improving service quality, as connectivity continues to play an increasingly central role in daily life and business across the country.
