Pakistan’s digital landscape has faced significant disruption since the start of 2026, with internet connectivity across the country impacted for over 48 hours as of January 6. Nayatel, one of Pakistan’s leading internet service providers, confirmed the disruption via their official X account, citing a major fault in one of their two upstream providers. The hardware failure has triggered a ripple effect, severely affecting internet traffic nationwide and highlighting vulnerabilities in the country’s digital infrastructure.

The primary cause of the disruption has been traced to Transworld, a major fibre backbone provider in Pakistan. Nayatel relies heavily on Transworld’s network infrastructure, and a fault in the fibre backbone has compromised the uplink, resulting in slowed upload speeds and intermittent connectivity for users. While Nayatel’s subscribers are among the most affected, tests and user reports confirm that other major service providers, including PTCL, Zong, and Ufone, are also experiencing similar connectivity challenges. The outage has affected both residential and commercial users, limiting access to essential online services and digital platforms.

To compound the situation, Nayatel has announced an “Essential Maintenance Activity” scheduled for January 7, 2026, between 12:00 AM and 02:00 PM. This maintenance window is expected to cause further service interruptions, potentially extending the period of degraded connectivity. Technical teams from Nayatel are actively working with the upstream provider to restore full service, but an official estimated time for repair has not yet been provided. The prolonged outage underscores the dependence of multiple ISPs on shared backbone infrastructure and raises questions about redundancy and resilience in Pakistan’s digital ecosystem.

Industry experts note that the outage highlights the critical importance of maintaining robust infrastructure and backup systems for digital services in Pakistan. As businesses and individuals increasingly rely on stable internet connectivity for work, education, and communication, prolonged disruptions can have wide-ranging impacts on economic activity and public service delivery. Users are advised to monitor official announcements from Nayatel, PTCL, Zong, and Ufone for updates, while service providers continue efforts to resolve the issue. This incident emphasizes the need for further investment in national digital infrastructure to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
