The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Society (IEEE) and the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) collaborated on a two-day technological event called CodinGuru 5.0 in association with S&P Global Pakistan. The goal of this competition was to raise kids’ tech literacy and inspire talented and ambitious coders to develop their skills.
“At S&P Global, we not only deploy cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), virtual reality (VR), data science, and analytics in our products to power the markets of the future, but we do so while being inclusive and equitable towards our people, clients, and the communities we operate in,” senior director commercial Shafqaat H. Shah told the audience. We can speed up global progress if we work together.
Three competition categories—programming, UI/UX, and webapp module—were planned. Through the use of several programming languages like C++, Java, and Python, the participating teams generated creative solutions for everyday problems like delivery applications, climate change initiatives, and energy-saving appliances.
A panel discussion on the importance of inclusion in the workplace was organised to emphasise the relationship between “Diversity, Equity & Inclusion” (DEI) and innovation and creativity. It featured Senior Director Commercial S&P Global, Shafqaat H. Shah, Director People S&P Global, Samia Qamar, and Founder Skills Todo, Ayesha Zaman, and was moderated by Campus Recruiter S&P Global, Hiba Khalid. “A vibrant, creative company must strive to reflect the society in which it operates. Coding skills are essential to success, and S&P Global assures their growth by embracing a variety of backgrounds and, more significantly, viewpoints that lead to more original solutions to challenges, according to Samia Qamar, director of people at S&P Global.
The top three spots were won by three teams: COMSATS Lahore for the WebDEV module, LUMS students for the UI/UX module, and FAST Karachi for the programming contest.
This massive coding competition has been run by LUMS since 2018. A total of 70 teams from various universities competed in the competition this year, with the majority coming from Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Punjab University College of Information Technology, FAST National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences, University of Engineering and Technology, Information Technology University, COMSATS, and Government College University Lahore. The competitors had 24 hours to develop an innovative IT solution and user-friendly user interface for a current real-world issue that was in line with the provided theme.
