Microsoft’s recent layoffs, which affected over 9,000 employees across the company, have resulted in the cancellation of several high-profile gaming projects. Titles such as ZeniMax Online’s new MMO, the long-awaited Perfect Dark reboot, Rare’s Everwild, and Avalanche Studios’ Contraband have all been shelved. However, one title remains in active development — Hideo Kojima’s ambitious Xbox horror project, OD.

The confirmation comes via Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who, while reporting on the cancellation of Contraband, inquired about the status of OD. A Microsoft spokesperson responded that the game “is still in development,” quelling speculation that the project might have been quietly dropped amid the restructuring.

OD was first unveiled during The Game Awards 2023, where its announcement quickly became the most talked-about reveal of the event. At the time, it overshadowed other announcements and captured significant attention within the gaming community. Since then, updates on the project have been scarce. Kojima has made occasional remarks about OD in interviews, describing it as a “risky” and “divisive” title designed to push creative boundaries. He has emphasized that the game will be something players have never quite experienced before, acknowledging that not everyone will respond to it in the same way.

In addition to Kojima’s involvement, acclaimed horror filmmaker Jordan Peele is collaborating on OD. Details about his role in the project remain minimal, but his participation has fueled speculation about the game’s cinematic and atmospheric ambitions. The combination of Kojima’s unconventional storytelling style and Peele’s horror expertise has left fans eager to see how the partnership will manifest in gameplay and narrative design.

Since OD’s announcement, Kojima Productions has been focused on the release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, which is now available in stores. With that title launched, attention is expected to shift toward OD, potentially bringing more concrete information about its direction and development progress. While Microsoft’s recent project cuts have shaken confidence in the stability of its game lineup, OD’s survival suggests that the company still sees it as a strategic and creative priority.

For now, little is known about the gameplay mechanics, setting, or release timeline for OD. What is clear is that the game continues to move forward despite a challenging period for Xbox Game Studios, and its creators appear determined to deliver an experience that defies traditional genre expectations. As anticipation builds, the gaming community remains watchful for the next reveal.
