A high-level delegation from the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry visited Colombo from May 5 to 8, 2026, in a focused effort to deepen trade and economic cooperation between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The visit was facilitated by the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan in coordination with Pakistan’s Trade Mission in Colombo, ensuring that engagements across the four-day programme were structured around meaningful and outcome-oriented business interactions rather than ceremonial exchanges. The delegation’s visit reflects a broader push by Pakistan’s trade institutions to diversify and deepen bilateral economic relationships with South Asian neighbours at a time when regional trade connectivity is gaining renewed attention across the subcontinent.
During the visit, delegation members held productive meetings with Sri Lankan government officials and leading trade institutions, with discussions centred on identifying practical avenues for expanding two-way trade and reducing the barriers that have historically kept bilateral commerce below its potential. A key outcome of the mission was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, aimed at strengthening business-to-business linkages and facilitating joint ventures between Pakistani and Sri Lankan enterprises. The agreement is intended to create a more structured framework for private sector collaboration, moving beyond general expressions of intent toward defined channels through which companies from both countries can explore commercial partnerships, co-investment opportunities, and knowledge exchange.
The delegation also held strategic discussions with Sri Lanka’s Minister of Trade, focusing on expanding bilateral trade volumes and addressing policy-level impediments to greater economic integration between the two countries. Pakistan and Sri Lanka already share a Preferential Trade Agreement that provides tariff concessions on a range of goods, but trade volumes have remained modest relative to the size of both economies, making visits of this nature an important mechanism for identifying and resolving practical obstacles at both the institutional and business levels. The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan’s role in facilitating the mission underscores the institution’s mandate to actively support Pakistani exporters and trade bodies in accessing and deepening relationships with international markets. With the Memorandum of Understanding now in place and ministerial-level dialogue initiated, the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry delegation’s Colombo visit marks a concrete step toward building a more active and structured economic partnership between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
