Cursor has launched Origin, a new code hosting platform designed to compete with GitHub as developers face repeated service disruptions and performance problems on the Microsoft owned platform. The launch expands Cursor beyond its established artificial intelligence powered coding environment and into the broader software development infrastructure market. Origin is designed to provide developers with tools for storing source code, collaborating on projects, managing repositories and handling pull requests, while keeping these activities closely connected with Cursor’s AI coding environment. The timing of the launch has drawn additional attention because GitHub experienced a major outage shortly after Origin began rolling out.
Origin is intended to provide many of the functions developers commonly use GitHub for, including hosting repositories, browsing and editing code, collaborating with other developers and managing pull requests. The platform is being positioned around an AI focused development workflow, with Cursor planning to introduce additional agent native capabilities. These features are expected to connect AI coding agents more directly with the code hosting environment, potentially allowing developers to move between generating code, reviewing changes and managing projects within a more integrated workflow. Origin also supports connections with GitHub, allowing developers to work with existing repositories rather than requiring an immediate move away from the established platform.
Cursor’s entry into code hosting comes as GitHub has faced several service disruptions that have frustrated developers. A major outage on August 17 affected multiple GitHub services, including its website, application programming interface, pull requests, webhooks, GitHub Actions and GitHub Copilot. Error rates reportedly reached around 20 percent for general web and application programming interface traffic, while repository content and archive downloads experienced significantly higher failure rates. The incident was resolved after several hours, although the root cause remained under investigation. The latest disruption followed other incidents affecting GitHub services during August, adding to concerns among developers who depend on the platform for software development and deployment workflows.
Origin is initially being rolled out in an early beta to paid Cursor users, giving the company an opportunity to test its code hosting infrastructure and gather feedback from developers. The platform’s launch marks a significant expansion for Cursor, moving the company from an AI coding assistant toward a broader development platform that can cover multiple stages of the software development process. While GitHub continues to have a much larger developer ecosystem and established enterprise presence, Cursor is attempting to differentiate Origin through its AI native approach and direct integration with coding agents. The company has also indicated plans to build a wider application ecosystem around the platform, which could eventually extend its capabilities beyond repository management and into additional software development workflows.
