Apple’s long rumored camera equipped AirPods have appeared in a leaked video found inside the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate, offering a first look at how the company’s proposed AI powered earbuds could work. The short demonstration shows a person wearing AirPods while holding up a book, with the device apparently using its cameras to identify the title and connect the visual information with Apple’s Visual Intelligence system. The discovery provides further indication that Apple is developing AirPods capable of giving Siri access to information from the user’s surroundings, although Apple has not officially announced the product or confirmed when it will be released.

The video was discovered in the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate and appears to demonstrate the intended use of the camera hardware rather than traditional photography. During the demonstration, the user holds a book in front of the AirPods, while a Siri voiceover explains that Visual Intelligence can make information from the user’s surroundings available for later use. The concept would allow the cameras to provide visual information to Apple’s artificial intelligence systems, giving Siri additional context about objects and locations around the wearer. Instead of opening a camera application on an iPhone, users could potentially rely on the AirPods to recognize something they are viewing and then ask Siri questions or save information based on what the earbuds detect. The leaked software also contains references to Apple’s internal B790 product code, which has previously been associated with camera equipped AirPods.

The camera system is reportedly intended to provide visual input for artificial intelligence rather than function as a conventional camera for taking photographs or recording videos. Previous reports have suggested that the cameras could act as visual sensors for Siri, allowing the assistant to better understand the environment around the wearer. Potential applications could include identifying objects, providing contextual information, remembering things the user sees and offering more precise assistance based on surroundings. The leaked software reportedly includes instructions indicating that the AirPods need to remain uncovered to provide accurate information, with users potentially receiving an alert if hair or another obstruction blocks the sensors. Earlier reports have also suggested that Apple could use small infrared cameras similar to technology used in Face ID, although the company has not confirmed the specifications of the hardware.

The appearance of the demonstration video has also renewed speculation about Apple’s launch plans for the camera equipped AirPods. Reports have previously suggested that Apple has been working on multiple versions of camera equipped AirPods, with the B790 model potentially arriving as soon as late 2026 while another model, identified as B798, has been associated with a 2027 release. Some reports have suggested that Apple could introduce the B790 version alongside its upcoming iPhone lineup, although no launch date has been confirmed. The leaked video does not clearly show the cameras themselves, and the AirPods used in the demonstration appear similar to existing models, meaning the footage may be an internal or placeholder demonstration rather than a final product presentation. For now, the discovery mainly confirms that Apple is actively developing software support for camera equipped AirPods and exploring how visual information could become part of its broader artificial intelligence experience.
