Sony has yet to finalize an internal release date for the PlayStation 6, with Chief Executive Officer Hiroki Totoki confirming that the company is still assessing when the next generation console should arrive. The uncertainty comes as the global memory supply situation creates additional pressure on hardware manufacturers, with rising component costs and shortages affecting plans across the gaming industry.

Speaking with The Wall Street Journal, Totoki said Sony has not decided on a specific launch date for the PlayStation 6. His comments add to growing uncertainty surrounding the successor to the PlayStation 5, which had previously been expected by many observers to make the transition to a new generation within the coming years. Sony is now assessing market conditions and the wider cost environment before committing to a launch schedule. The company is facing higher prices for memory and other components, creating additional considerations for a console that will require large scale manufacturing. Totoki has indicated that Sony needs to respond to the changing conditions in the hardware market, while the company continues to rely heavily on its broader entertainment operations, including games, movies, music and anime.

The memory shortage has become an important factor in discussions surrounding the PS6 because demand from artificial intelligence data centers has placed significant pressure on the global supply of memory components. Industry reports have already suggested that higher memory costs could affect the pricing and production schedules of upcoming gaming hardware. Earlier reports indicated that Sony could potentially delay the PS6 toward 2028 or 2029 if component costs remain elevated, although these timelines have not been officially confirmed by Sony. Other industry analysis has suggested that the company may still target an earlier launch window, depending on how memory prices and supply conditions develop. The lack of an official release date means that current projections remain speculative rather than representing a confirmed change to Sony’s plans.

The uncertainty surrounding the PS6 also gives Sony more reason to continue supporting the PlayStation 5 as its current generation platform. A longer PS5 lifecycle would allow the company to maintain its existing hardware business while giving developers additional time to release games for the current console. Sony has previously indicated that the PS5 remains within its expected lifecycle, while major upcoming games can continue attracting players without requiring an immediate transition to new hardware. At the same time, analysts have raised concerns that increasing component costs could push the eventual PS6 price considerably higher than previous PlayStation generations. Some industry estimates have placed a potential launch price near $1,000, although Sony has not announced official pricing. For now, the company has not committed to a PS6 release date, leaving the timing of the next PlayStation generation dependent on production costs, component availability and broader market conditions.
