YouTube Premium costs around $16 a month at its standard tier and has attracted a fair share of scepticism from users who see it primarily as a way to avoid advertisements on a platform that was once entirely free. But the subscription bundles a range of features beyond ad removal that go largely unnoticed by many paying subscribers, and knowing about them can meaningfully change how much value a user extracts from the monthly fee.
One of the more overlooked ways to reduce the effective cost of the subscription is to look for YouTube Premium bundled with other products and services. Signing up for Google Fi’s Unlimited Premium tier currently comes with six free months of YouTube Premium, while purchasing a new Pixel 10a smartphone includes three free months. In some cases these offers can be stacked, and since there is no penalty for cancellation, free trial periods can be activated and allowed to lapse without any ongoing commitment. For users already planning hardware or plan upgrades, these bundles can effectively halve the annual cost of the subscription. YouTube Premium also includes full access to YouTube Music, which could replace paid subscriptions to services like Spotify or Apple Music for users who are not invested in audiophile features like lossless audio, and YouTube Music’s integration with Google Home, Android Auto, Google TV, and Gemini makes it a practical option for users already embedded in the Google ecosystem.
Background play, the ability to keep a video running while using other apps or with the screen off, is one of the most frequently cited practical benefits of the subscription. Until recently a browser workaround existed for free users but Google closed that off earlier this year, making background play exclusively a Premium feature. For podcast listeners, joggers, and commuters this is particularly useful, though Android users should note that the YouTube app is frequently among the first processes terminated by the operating system’s battery management, which can interrupt playback. Offline downloads work on both mobile and desktop, allowing videos to be saved in advance for playback during flights, underground commutes, or areas with poor connectivity, though downloads are capped at 1080p resolution.
Premium subscribers also get early access to experimental features through YouTube Labs. The currently available opt-in feature is an Ask YouTube conversational search mode powered by Google’s Gemini Artificial Intelligence model. A more immediately practical recent addition is Auto Speed, which adjusts playback rate intelligently based on what is happening in the video rather than applying a uniform speed increase, slowing down during complex explanations and speeding up during slower-paced segments. Premium users also have access to playback speeds up to 3.0 times normal, higher bitrate streaming, higher-fidelity audio, and the Jump Ahead button, which when tapped after a double-tap skip surfaces the point in the video where most viewers choose to fast forward to, effectively clearing sponsored segments without manual scrubbing.
