YouTube has announced the expansion of its Remix feature for Shorts with a new artificial intelligence tool called Reimagine, designed to allow creators to transform individual scenes from existing Shorts into newly generated video clips using Google’s Veo video generation model. The company confirmed the update on March 18, stating that the feature would begin rolling out soon as part of its continuing efforts to build out artificial intelligence capabilities within the Shorts creation ecosystem.

The Reimagine tool is accessible through the Remix menu while a user is watching a Short, where it appears as a selectable option alongside existing remix features. Once chosen, users can pick a single frame from the Short and instruct the system on how they would like the scene to be altered or reimagined. Google’s Gemini model provides context-aware suggested prompts based on the selected scene, giving users a starting point, though custom instructions can also be entered directly for more specific or creative transformations. The tool then generates an eight-second video clip based on the input provided, with users able to supply up to two reference images to guide the visual direction of the output. This opens up a particularly accessible creative avenue, as users can insert their own photographs into generated scenarios, effectively placing themselves or others into scenes such as skydiving, racing, or other visually compelling contexts. Once the reimagined Short is completed and shared, it will include a link back to the original video from which the source frame was drawn.

The Reimagine tool builds on a series of artificial intelligence-powered features YouTube has introduced for Shorts creators in recent periods, including Shorts Templates, which allow users to incorporate personal photos into video formats, and the Photo to Video feature, which converts static images into animated clips. YouTube has stated that it intends to continue expanding its artificial intelligence toolkit for creators while maintaining that user-generated content will remain the priority, with the platform expressing a deliberate intent to avoid encouraging low-quality automated outputs that could dilute the quality and authenticity of content on the platform. No specific release date has been confirmed for the global rollout of Reimagine beyond the indication that it will become available soon.
