WhatsApp users are being advised to choose their new usernames carefully as the messaging platform prepares to introduce usernames that will allow people to connect without directly sharing their phone numbers. The upcoming feature is intended to provide users with greater privacy by creating an alternative identity for communication. However, the choice of username can also expose personal information or make it easier for strangers to connect accounts across different platforms. Security guidance recommends selecting a username that does not unnecessarily reveal a user’s real identity, location, birth year or other personal details.
One of the main recommendations is to avoid using the same username across WhatsApp and other social media platforms. Many users maintain the same handle on services such as Instagram, X, TikTok, gaming platforms and online forums, making their accounts easier to recognize. Reusing an identical username on WhatsApp could allow strangers to connect the messaging account with other online profiles and potentially gather additional information about the user. This could include details about personal interests, professional activities or location. A separate WhatsApp username can make this type of cross-platform identification more difficult and provide an additional layer of privacy for users communicating with people they do not know personally.
Users are also advised to avoid usernames containing easily identifiable information such as their full name, year of birth or place of residence. Names following patterns that combine a person’s name with a year or location may be convenient to remember, but they can reveal more information than intended. Very short and common usernames are also less suitable for privacy because they may be easier for spammers to identify and test. A more unique username that does not contain predictable personal information can make it more difficult for unwanted contacts to locate an account. For people using WhatsApp professionally, a recognizable name may still be appropriate, while private users may prefer a neutral pseudonym that provides greater separation between their personal identity and online communications.
The username feature does not replace other security measures, meaning users should continue using available privacy and account protection settings. Additional security features can provide another barrier against unwanted messages and automated attempts to contact accounts. The feature could offer practical privacy benefits for people participating in large groups, communicating with customers, dealing with marketplace transactions or interacting with people they do not know personally. However, users will need to treat usernames as an online identifier rather than proof of someone’s identity, particularly when receiving unexpected requests or messages.
