Sony has officially launched the Xperia 1 VIII, its latest flagship smartphone, with the most significant upgrades centred on photography and camera intelligence. The phone introduces Sony’s new AI Camera Assistant powered by Xperia Intelligence, which can suggest changes to shooting settings based on what the camera is pointed at, automatically recognising the scene, subject, and weather conditions to recommend the most appropriate colour tones, lens selection, and bokeh effects, which can then be applied with a single tap. The feature represents Sony’s most integrated attempt yet to bring professional-grade camera decision-making to a wider audience without requiring users to manually navigate complex manual settings each time conditions change.
The telephoto camera has received the most substantial hardware upgrade, featuring a new 1/1.56-inch image sensor that Sony describes as approximately four times larger than the one used in the previous model, enabling more detailed images in low-light conditions, with the phone applying RAW multi-frame processing, high dynamic range, and noise reduction for photographs taken in challenging lighting environments. All three rear cameras are now arranged in a square formation rather than the vertical island layout used in earlier Xperia models, while the front-facing camera is a 12-megapixel unit for selfies. The square camera arrangement also signals a visual redesign that gives the Xperia 1 VIII a noticeably different rear profile compared to its predecessor, bringing it more in line with the broader industry shift away from vertical camera strips.
The Xperia 1 VIII carries a 6.5-inch OLED display and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform. It will be available in Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold colours, with the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage configuration priced at 1,499 euros or £1,399, and the 16GB RAM and 1TB storage configuration priced at 1,999 euros or £1,849. Pre-orders are open now with delivery beginning in June, though availability is currently limited to Europe, with Sony having no plans to bring the device to the United States. Customers who pre-order will receive Sony’s WH-1000XM6 wireless headphones at no additional cost. Also worth noting is the retention of a 3.5mm audio jack, a feature that has become increasingly rare on modern flagships and one that Sony has continued to include as a differentiator for audiophiles and users who prefer wired listening without adapters.
