Punjab government has approved the use of camera monitoring systems at marriage halls, marquees, commercial farmhouses and major food chains as part of a broader strategy to curb tax evasion and improve revenue collection across the province. The decision was taken during a meeting on provincial revenue chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, where officials reviewed tax collection performance and measures aimed at improving documentation of economic activity. The initiative is expected to enhance transaction monitoring and help authorities identify underreporting of sales and other practices that contribute to revenue leakage.
According to officials, transactions at large commercial venues and food chains will be monitored through digital surveillance mechanisms to improve transparency and compliance. Businesses found issuing fake receipts or concealing sales could face enforcement action under applicable regulations. The meeting also reviewed proposals to expand the use of digital payment systems at major restaurants and commercial establishments, reducing reliance on cash transactions and supporting better documentation of business activity. Authorities believe that greater adoption of digital payments can contribute to a more transparent financial ecosystem while improving tax collection efficiency.
The initiative forms part of Punjab’s wider efforts to modernize revenue administration through technology driven solutions. Officials informed the meeting that Punjab Revenue Authority has expanded its operational footprint from 10 districts to 26 districts and established dedicated intelligence, audit and legal units to strengthen compliance monitoring. Revenue collection in the province reportedly increased significantly during the past fiscal period, prompting authorities to set higher targets for the upcoming financial year. Investments in technology, enforcement mechanisms and taxpayer awareness are expected to play an important role in achieving these objectives.
The move reflects a growing focus on digital tools and electronic payment systems as governments seek to improve tax administration and reduce undocumented economic activity. By combining camera based monitoring with efforts to encourage digital transactions, Punjab aims to create a more accountable business environment while improving transparency in commercial operations. The initiative highlights the increasing role of technology in revenue management and supports broader efforts to accelerate the transition toward a more digitally documented economy.
