Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has virtually inaugurated the Green Electric Bus Service in Layyah, extending the province’s electric transport network to another district. The launch ceremony was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, with local political leaders and government officials participating through a video link before local authorities formally launched the service with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
Ten electric buses have already arrived in Layyah, with five additional buses expected to join the fleet in the coming weeks. Officials said the Green Electric Bus Service will provide residents with safer, more comfortable, and modern public transportation while reducing environmental pollution and encouraging sustainable urban mobility in the district.
The Layyah launch follows a similar rollout in Narowal, where 11 electric buses began operating across six routes with fares fixed at Rs20, a pricing model officials have pointed to as evidence of the government’s intent to keep the service affordable for everyday commuters. Layyah is among a group of districts, including Chiniot, Okara, Sialkot, and Sheikhupura, that Punjab’s Transport Department has been working to bring online as part of a broader phased expansion of the electric bus network across the province.
The rollout forms part of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s wider Green Mobility vision, under which Punjab currently operates around 400 electric buses across 18 districts, with plans to expand the fleet to 1,500 buses at the tehsil level over the coming years. The Chief Minister has directed authorities to accelerate the pace of district level launches, with dozens of additional buses expected to become operational across several more districts in the coming weeks as part of the province’s continued push toward electric public transport.
