The Punjab government has launched a digital initiative to strengthen oversight of school inspections by enabling real-time tracking of Monitoring and Evaluation Assistants (MEAs) through GPS technology. The step is aimed at increasing accountability and reducing the chances of desk-based or inaccurate reporting in the province’s public education sector. This move comes as part of broader efforts to improve service delivery and transparency in government operations.

To operationalize the initiative, the Program Monitoring and Implementation Unit (PMIU) has signed an agreement with a private telecom provider to supply internet connectivity for all inspection staff. Under this partnership, each MEA will be provided with a dedicated SIM card bundled with internet data. These SIMs will be used exclusively for official duties and allow centralized monitoring of inspectors’ locations and digital activity during field visits.

The system will capture GPS coordinates when MEAs visit assigned schools, ensuring their physical presence is verified electronically. By tracking movement and internet activity in real time, the government aims to eliminate fake inspections and improve the accuracy of performance evaluations. The location-based validation process will provide clear evidence of whether or not the officers are conducting on-site assessments as required.

Officials involved in the implementation have highlighted that this measure directly addresses recurring issues related to inspection integrity. Instances where inspection reports were filed without actual school visits had raised concerns over the credibility of monitoring processes. With GPS logging and automated location updates, each visit can now be matched against the schedule and verified through a centralized dashboard.

The new system also lays the foundation for stricter enforcement policies. Any MEA found submitting fabricated reports without visiting schools will face disciplinary action under the rules set by the PMIU and relevant education departments. The digital logs will serve as primary evidence for investigations into performance violations and misconduct.

This digital monitoring framework is expected to streamline reporting, improve data reliability, and provide education authorities with better oversight tools. It also reflects the provincial government’s growing focus on using technology for governance reform and public sector accountability. By integrating mobile connectivity and GPS tracking, the initiative represents a practical application of digital transformation within the education management system.

The collaboration between PMIU and the telecom company marks a key public-private partnership in expanding the digital footprint of government operations. It supports more consistent inspection standards while promoting data-driven decision-making in the education sector. As the initiative is rolled out, field operations are expected to become more transparent, ensuring that school inspections translate into actionable improvements in public education delivery.
