PTA chairman addressed several pressing issues related to internet and telecommunications in Pakistan during an informal conversation with journalists.

Regarding internet speed, the chairman assured that the current issues would be resolved by the end of October. The PTA is upgrading its Web Management System (internet firewall), expanding data capacity from 5 terabytes to 8 terabytes, which is expected to significantly improve internet speeds across the country.

The chairman acknowledged the use of internet shutdowns in Pakistan but emphasized that national security remains a priority. He compared Pakistan’s internet shutdowns to India, which experienced 116 shutdowns in 2023 compared to Pakistan’s seven. The chairman noted that mobile services were less frequently suspended during the recent 10th of Muharram, and any shutdowns were limited to specific times and areas.

Regarding spectrum and infrastructure, the chairman addressed the issue of spectrum congestion in Pakistan, noting that the country has a total population of 242 million with a spectrum capacity of 274 MHz. He compared Pakistan’s situation to India, which invested $13 billion in fiberization over the past five years. The chairman expressed optimism that introducing 5G and implementing national infrastructure improvements would address the spectrum issue.

The PTA chairman clarified that the decision to block the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) was made by the federal government. He noted that X has a low compliance rate of 27%, compared to 93% from other social media platforms. The issue is currently under review by the Sindh High Court, and PTA will present a report on X’s non-compliance.

The chairman also addressed various other issues, including the PTA’s opposition to the FBR’s directive to block SIM cards and the rejection of a request to suspend mobile services during the MD-CAT exams.

Overall, the PTA chairman provided insights into the challenges and opportunities facing Pakistan’s telecommunications sector and outlined the steps being taken to address these issues.
