In a landmark move to bridge the gap between academia and industry, Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) formally unveiled its Center of Excellence for Research, Development and Training (CERDT) at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore. The inauguration ceremony, held on May 25, 2025, marked a significant milestone in PPL’s long-standing commitment to empowering Pakistan’s youth through research, technical training, and innovation in the energy sector.
PPL’s Managing Director and CEO Imran Abbasy presided over the ceremony as the Chief Guest, officially inaugurating the state-of-the-art facility by unveiling a commemorative plaque. The event was attended by UET Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Shahid Munir, along with prominent figures including the Chairman of the Pakistan Engineering Council, Vice Chancellor of Qarshi University, Chairman of the Pakistan Chemicals Manufacturing Association, and Chairman of the Pakistan Chemistry Council. A large number of faculty members, students, and industry stakeholders were also present, signaling strong support for the initiative.
The CERDT has been established under PPL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme and is backed by a substantial PKR 51.1 million grant for the period 2022–2025. The funding covers the construction, furnishing, and procurement of high-end laboratory and simulation equipment, creating a modern learning and research environment for students and professionals alike. This flagship academia-industry collaboration reflects PPL’s strategic efforts to enhance local technical capacity, especially in the vital oil and gas sector.
During his keynote address, Abbasy highlighted PPL’s broader social investment vision. “As one of Pakistan’s largest corporate donors, contributing over PKR 3.5 billion annually, we are deeply invested in building human capital,” he stated. “CERDT represents our commitment to fostering innovation, empowering youth, and enabling Pakistan to meet its energy challenges through indigenous research and training.” He emphasized that the Centre will not only serve PPL staff but also extend its benefits to the wider industry, offering free technical training, conducting applied research, and supporting in-house development projects such as shale gas studies and production optimization.
The facility is also envisioned to become a hub for national and international petroleum conferences and seminars, offering a platform for thought leadership, knowledge sharing, and cross-border collaboration in energy innovation.
Echoing these sentiments, UET Vice Chancellor Dr. Shahid Munir praised the initiative as a strategic step forward. “The establishment of CERDT positions UET at the forefront of producing industry-ready professionals who are not just academically proficient but also practically equipped to tackle real-world challenges,” he said. “It exemplifies how university-industry partnerships can drive national development.”
The launch of CERDT underscores the increasing importance of public-private partnerships in fostering technological innovation and sustainable development. As Pakistan continues to grapple with growing energy demands and the need for self-reliance, such initiatives are essential for cultivating a skilled workforce capable of driving long-term economic growth and energy security.
