Pakistan to Finalize Personal Data Protection Bill in 14 Days

Ministry of Information Technology (IT) has taken a significant step towards strengthening data privacy regulations by announcing a 14-day deadline to finalize the draft of the much-anticipated Personal Data Protection Bill. This update was formally communicated to the Senate Standing Committee on IT, underscoring the government’s commitment to advancing data protection laws in line with global standards.

The revised draft of the bill has been shared with key stakeholders, including industry leaders, digital rights organizations, and legal experts, inviting their feedback and recommendations. This consultative process has garnered substantial interest, leading to a wave of comments and suggestions that are currently under review. In response to stakeholder requests, certain critical provisions of the bill are undergoing detailed discussions to ensure that the final legislation is both comprehensive and effective.

The Ministry of IT has confirmed that the draft is expected to be finalized within the next two weeks. Once completed, it will be presented to an inter-ministerial committee for further deliberation. Following this step, the legislative process will officially commence, ensuring that all legal and procedural requirements are met. The bill will then be submitted for in-principle approval to the Federal Cabinet, after which it will move forward through the necessary governmental channels.

The proposed law is expected to introduce stringent regulations to safeguard the personal data of citizens, addressing concerns over data misuse, unauthorized access, and breaches. By implementing robust data protection measures, the bill aims to provide individuals with greater control over their personal information while ensuring businesses comply with best practices for data privacy and security.
