In a significant move aligned with the Digital Pakistan vision, Federal Minister for IT and Telecom, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, held a strategic meeting with Federal Minister for Railways, Hanif Abbasi, to discuss the digital transformation of Pakistan Railways. The high-level dialogue focused on modernizing key operational functions of the national railway system through technology, signaling a major advancement in the country’s public sector digitalization efforts.

The collaborative initiative will encompass the digitization of critical systems within Pakistan Railways, including ticketing services, human resource management, and other internal operational frameworks. The objective is to replace outdated, manual processes with robust digital infrastructure to improve efficiency, transparency, and service quality for millions of passengers and employees nationwide.

This development comes at a time when Pakistan is intensifying efforts to streamline governance, increase institutional efficiency, and harness digital tools to enhance public service delivery. The Ministry of IT & Telecom has pledged complete support to Pakistan Railways in this transformation journey, offering both strategic guidance and technical resources to ensure a secure and modernized digital ecosystem.

Shaza Fatima Khawaja reaffirmed her ministry’s commitment to backing all federal departments in adopting digital systems, emphasizing that integrated technological solutions are essential for sustainable development and long-term service improvement. The collaboration is not just about technology implementation—it also represents a cultural shift towards more data-driven decision-making, improved inter-departmental communication, and better citizen engagement.

Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi welcomed the initiative, acknowledging the importance of leveraging digital technologies to revamp the country’s aging railway infrastructure. He noted that digitization is vital not only for improving operational performance but also for attracting investment, enhancing passenger convenience, and reducing systemic inefficiencies.

The proposed upgrades in ticketing will likely include the introduction of e-ticketing platforms and mobile apps that simplify the booking process for users. On the HR front, digital systems will facilitate efficient workforce management, payroll automation, and performance tracking—helping the organization function more like a modern public utility. Internal systems are also expected to be revamped with improved cybersecurity, automated reporting, and real-time data monitoring to strengthen overall governance.

This joint effort between the Ministry of IT & Telecom and Pakistan Railways is part of a broader national digital agenda, which aims to modernize public infrastructure, promote e-governance, and build digital resilience across critical sectors. It sets a strong precedent for inter-ministerial collaboration in achieving the government’s digital transformation goals.

With this partnership, Pakistan Railways is set to emerge as a flagship example of how digital technologies can be effectively deployed to uplift legacy public sector institutions. The initiative is expected to pave the way for further collaborations across other ministries and state-owned enterprises, reinforcing Pakistan’s ambition to become a digitally empowered economy.
