OpenAI has introduced Prism, a new workspace designed to help researchers draft, revise, and collaborate on academic work more efficiently. The company describes Prism as a free, AI-native platform built specifically for scientists, combining multiple research tools into a single, cloud-based environment. Running on OpenAI’s latest GPT-5.2 model, Prism is available now to anyone with a personal ChatGPT account, with plans to expand access to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Education users in the near future.

Research workflows often require switching between numerous applications. Scholars draft papers in one editor, manage citations in another, and compile LaTeX files in a separate platform. PDFs, reference managers, and chat tools are frequently used alongside these applications, creating a fragmented environment that slows progress. OpenAI designed Prism to address these challenges by integrating drafting, revision, collaboration, and publication preparation in a single workspace. This allows researchers to maintain focus and reduces the inefficiencies associated with moving content between different tools.

At the core of Prism is GPT-5.2, which can understand the full structure of research documents, including equations, references, and context. This enables the AI to offer suggestions based on an entire paper rather than just a snippet, supporting a more coherent writing process. Prism builds on Crixet, a cloud-based LaTeX platform previously acquired by OpenAI, which provides the technical foundation for seamless document creation and collaboration. Researchers can maintain multiple projects simultaneously and include unlimited collaborators per project, making it suitable for teams of co-authors, students, and advisors.

Prism also offers advanced capabilities for handling equations, citations, and figures. Users can convert handwritten diagrams or whiteboard equations into LaTeX directly within the platform, and real-time collaboration allows in-place edits without switching screens. The system includes features for literature search, enabling researchers to find and insert relevant references without leaving the workspace. Additionally, optional voice-based editing allows for quick adjustments while maintaining the flow of writing. By consolidating these tools, Prism aims to streamline the academic research process, making collaboration and publication preparation more efficient and accessible for scientists.
