On the directive of the Chief Minister of Punjab, the Local Government Department has formally launched biometric verification for civil registration in Nankana Sahib, moving the district’s birth, death, and other civil registration processes onto a more modern, technology driven footing. Officials said the initiative is aimed at strengthening the transparency, legal standing, and long term reliability of civil registration records maintained across the district.
Speaking at the launch, officials said the new system would help prevent fraudulent entries and the fake issuance of certificates, addressing a longstanding concern around the manual registration processes previously used across Punjab’s local government offices. By tying registration to biometric verification, authorities aim to ensure that each entry can be traced back to a verified individual, reducing the scope for duplicate or fraudulent records to enter the civil registration system undetected.
Officials added that the use of modern technology would help ensure faster, more transparent, and higher quality service delivery for citizens interacting with civil registration offices in the district. The event concluded with the distribution of commemorative shields to officers and staff members recognised for their notable performance in supporting the rollout.
The Nankana Sahib launch builds on a broader digitisation push already underway in the district’s civil registration system. National Database and Registration Authority had earlier introduced an online birth and death registration service allowing citizens to submit applications directly to their respective union councils from home, with Nankana Sahib among the first areas selected for the service’s initial rollout, alongside Chakwal and Jhelum, covering dozens of union councils across the three districts. The Local Government and Community Development Department has separately been running a wider information technology based project aimed at transforming municipal service delivery from a manual to an e-governance model across Punjab, an effort that has included dashboard based monitoring systems for districts including Nankana Sahib.
With biometric verification now formally added to the civil registration process, Nankana Sahib joins a growing list of areas across Punjab where the provincial government has moved to introduce biometric checks into official record keeping, following similar efforts already applied to property registration and vehicle registration in the province. Officials said the latest step reflects continued efforts by the Punjab government to modernise civil documentation processes and reduce opportunities for record tampering across the province’s local government institutions.
