A high-level delegation from Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, led by Prof. Dr. Aneel Kumar, Pro Vice Chancellor, and Prof. Emeritus Bhawani Shankar Chowdhry, Advisor for International Collaboration Development, visited Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, upon the invitation of Prof. Paolo Bottoni. The visit was aimed at exploring strategic academic collaboration and European Union-funded opportunities in higher education, with a particular emphasis on low-carbon and resilient infrastructure development. The discussions represented a meaningful step in MUET’s ongoing effort to build credible international partnerships that align with both Pakistan’s development priorities and the European Union’s broader sustainability agenda.

At the centre of the dialogue was academia’s role in supporting the European Green Deal, with both sides engaging in detailed exchanges on how universities can drive sustainable behavioral change across societies by developing the knowledge, competencies, skills, and values required for a green transition. Prof. Dr. Aneel Kumar delivered a detailed presentation on the recently established SINCERE-MUET Group, outlining its mission to foster innovation, sustainability-focused research, and global academic partnerships. In a significant outcome of the visit, Prof. Paolo Bottoni was invited to serve as a Keynote Speaker at the upcoming SINCERE-MUET International Conference and to join the International Advisory Board of SINCERE-MUET, both of which he accepted, signalling a firm commitment to ongoing collaboration between the two institutions.

Prof. Bottoni also presented an overview of several European Union-funded projects he currently leads, sharing valuable insights into successful international collaborations, International Credit Mobility arrangements, and funding mechanisms available to address global sustainability challenges. These exchanges gave the MUET delegation a clearer understanding of the pathways through which Pakistani universities can access European research funding and embed themselves within broader international consortia working on climate and sustainability issues. Both sides identified future collaboration areas that align closely with European Union strategic objectives, including advancing green and inclusive economic modernisation while promoting innovation, competitiveness, and climate neutrality; promoting artificial intelligence applications in agriculture, particularly for plant growth monitoring and smart farming solutions; enhancing climate awareness, resilience, and sustainability across all sectors; and accelerating the transition toward a green and circular economy through academia-industry collaboration and private sector engagement.

The visit concluded on a warm note, with MUET presenting a university memento to Prof. Bottoni as a gesture of goodwill and partnership. The engagement marks a significant step in positioning MUET as a proactive contributor to global sustainability and innovation agendas, reinforcing the university’s ambition to move beyond regional academic boundaries and engage meaningfully with the international research community. As European Union-funded programmes continue to offer substantial opportunities for universities in developing countries, this dialogue between MUET and Sapienza University of Rome lays the groundwork for structured, long-term collaboration that can yield tangible benefits for students, researchers, and the broader academic ecosystem in Pakistan.
