LUMS has formalized a new academic-industry collaboration with Zhejiang Lanyu Digital Technology Co. (ZLDTC), aiming to strengthen applied research in textile sciences in Pakistan. This partnership follows a year-long effort by Dr. Ali Rauf, Assistant Professor at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), who has been actively working with ZLDTC to explore digital ink performance and its compatibility with various fabric types.

Through this engagement, LUMS has begun introducing specialized research capabilities in areas such as color retention and fabric durability. These capabilities are central to enhancing Pakistan’s position in the global textile industry, especially in digital textile printing technologies that require precision and quality control. The formalization of this collaboration through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) demonstrates a growing commitment to bridging academic research with industrial development.

Dr. Walther Schwarzacher, Dean of SBASSE, noted the significance of this development for LUMS and its broader relationship with the textile sector. He emphasized that the collaboration is a first step toward deeper engagement with industry, where research, experimentation, and student involvement can contribute directly to real-world industrial challenges. The new partnership is set to provide LUMS students with greater exposure to hands-on research and collaborative opportunities in emerging areas of material science and textile engineering.

As part of the long-term vision, Zhejiang Lanyu Digital Technology Co. has announced plans to invest in a large-scale ink manufacturing and supply facility in Faisalabad. The facility, estimated at USD 200 million, will focus on serving Pakistan’s expanding textile printing needs. LUMS, with its advanced research infrastructure and faculty expertise, is expected to provide technical insights and local knowledge that could support product testing, quality assurance, and innovation in the production process.

Mr. Afzal Ahmad, Regional Manager Asia at ZLDTC, highlighted the role of academic partnerships in driving product innovation and sustainability. He expressed confidence that working with LUMS will lead to practical innovations rooted in science and research, especially as the company looks to optimize ink formulations for local textile materials and processes.

This academic-industry linkage not only supports Pakistan’s textile innovation goals but also reflects LUMS’ strategic approach to creating value through interdisciplinary collaborations. With increased access to international expertise and industry investment, such initiatives can help the country strengthen its position in value-added manufacturing and advanced textile research. The partnership sets a strong precedent for future engagements between academic institutions and global technology companies, encouraging a culture of research-based industrial growth.
