The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved in principle the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence Education Authority as part of a broader plan to modernise the province’s education system through digital transformation and AI-based learning models. The approval was granted during a high-level meeting of the Elementary and Secondary Education Department chaired by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, where ongoing reforms in virtual schooling, digital classrooms, and AI-assisted teaching systems were reviewed in detail. The proposed authority is expected to serve as a central body responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring artificial intelligence-driven education initiatives across public schools in the province.
Officials were briefed during the meeting on the government’s plans to introduce Pakistan’s first public-sector virtual school system alongside an AI Teacher programme aimed at enhancing access to quality education, particularly for students in remote and underserved areas. The AI-based learning model is intended to provide personalized instruction, reduce administrative workload for teachers, and ensure continuous availability of educational content in multiple languages including Urdu, English, and Pashto. Under the pilot phase, online learning systems have already been introduced in 46 government schools, with expansion plans to convert an additional 175 schools into virtual institutions under the upcoming development programme.
The proposed AI Education Authority will also align with broader reforms aimed at integrating advanced technology into the classroom environment. This includes the establishment of a central digital teaching studio equipped for live interactive classes and recorded lectures, enabling a hybrid learning ecosystem that blends traditional instruction with digital delivery. Officials highlighted that subjects such as English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology are already being supported through AI-assisted teaching tools, marking an early stage of implementation for technology-driven curriculum delivery in public education institutions.
The provincial leadership emphasised that the introduction of AI-based systems is intended to improve learning outcomes while ensuring inclusivity for students who are unable to attend physical schools, including overseas Pakistanis and out-of-school children who will be treated as regular students under the virtual education framework. Authorities also reiterated that the initiative is part of a structured effort to bring education services in line with modern global trends, with a focus on scalability, accessibility, and long-term sustainability of digital education infrastructure. The Chief Minister directed relevant departments to complete preparatory work on the AI Education Authority so that it can be made operational in a timely manner and integrated effectively into the ongoing education reform agenda.
