Islamabad is set to introduce artificial intelligence powered traffic signals under the Safe City Expansion Project, an initiative aimed at improving traffic flow and easing congestion across the capital. The plan was reviewed during a meeting chaired by Director General Safe City and Deputy Inspector General of Traffic Muhammad Haroon Joiya, bringing together officials to discuss how the new signal system would be implemented across the city.

Representatives from the Capital Development Authority and the Safe City technical team attended the meeting, where discussions centered on the technical and operational requirements needed to bring the project to completion. The proposed AI powered signal system is expected to improve overall traffic management, strengthen road safety, and encourage greater traffic discipline, while offering commuters a smoother experience navigating Islamabad’s road network during peak travel hours.

During the meeting, Haroon Joiya directed the relevant authorities to complete the project within the planned timeline and maintain close coordination throughout the implementation process to avoid delays. Officials said this level of coordination between different departments would be necessary given the scale of the rollout, which is expected to touch multiple intersections and traffic corridors across the capital rather than being limited to a single location.

According to an official familiar with the initiative, the AI powered traffic signal project forms part of the broader Safe City Expansion Project, which is focused on using advanced technology and artificial intelligence to modernize how traffic is managed in Islamabad while also strengthening smart policing capabilities in the federal capital. The initiative reflects a continued push by city authorities to integrate AI driven systems into public infrastructure, extending the use of smart technology beyond surveillance and security into everyday traffic management functions across the city.
