Huawei has introduced two new smartwatches designed specifically for children, the Watch Kids X1 and Watch Kids X1 Pro, announced globally at the company’s Innovative Product Launch event alongside the Watch Fit 5 series, Watch Ultimate Design Spring Edition, and Watch GT Runner 2 Racing Legend Edition. Both devices are built around a child-focused design featuring a flippable and 360-degree rotating body, with the standard Watch Kids X1 coming with a soft silicone strap while the X1 Pro adds a detachable design that allows the watch body to sit inside a camera-style case included in the box, enabling children to use it more like a handheld camera for capturing moments throughout the day.
Both watches feature a 1.82-inch AMOLED display with 480 by 408 pixel resolution and a pre-applied anti-sunlight screen protective film, along with a 5 megapixel 110-degree wide front camera and a 13 megapixel rear camera for photos and high-definition video calls through Huawei’s FamCare app. The FamCare application, compatible with both Android and iOS, serves as the primary interface through which parents manage and monitor their child’s device. Through the FamCare app, parents can monitor activity status in real time, create safe and dangerous zones, receive alerts when children enter or leave those zones, manage application usage, set focus time, block calls, and make video calls directly from their phone to the child’s watch. There is also an Emergency SOS button on the side of the watch which can instantly send an SOS message or place a call by pressing it five times using cellular connectivity.
The Watch Kids X1 series supports dual-band Global Navigation Satellite System positioning, dual-band Wi-Fi for indoor location assistance, cellular connectivity, wireless local area network, Bluetooth, and Global Navigation Satellite System, giving parents multiple overlapping methods to confirm their child’s whereabouts with accuracy. Health monitoring features are also built into both models, including emotional wellbeing monitoring and heart rate tracking, with both watches carrying 2GB of RAM. The combination of precise location tracking, dual cameras, video calling, parental app controls, and an emergency alert mechanism makes the Watch Kids X1 series one of the more comprehensively equipped children’s wearables to arrive in the market this year, positioning Huawei directly against established players in the category including the Garmin Bounce 2 and Fitbit Ace LTE as competition in the children’s connected wearable space continues to intensify.
