A mobile phone shop located in Karachi’s upscale Defence Phase 5 area fell victim to an armed robbery, further intensifying fears among the city’s business community over the growing security crisis. The incident took place on Badar Commercial Street, within the jurisdiction of the Darakhshan Police Station, and has raised concerns about the lack of effective protection for traders operating in high-end commercial zones.

According to the trader who owns the shop, the robbery was carried out by four armed men who arrived in a vehicle. Three of the suspects entered the shop, while the fourth stood guard outside. The first to enter was a man dressed in white shalwar kameez, who pretended to be a regular customer while talking on a mobile phone. Moments later, two more individuals—one in green and the other in blue shalwar kameez—followed him into the store, brandishing pistols.

The armed suspects held the shop’s staff and customers hostage at gunpoint as they swiftly looted the premises. The robbers fled the scene with several high-end mobile phones, including two iPhones—one of which was the latest 16 Pro Max—along with three other premium models and approximately Rs. 30,000 in cash.

CCTV footage capturing the incident has since surfaced, providing evidence of the robbers’ entry, intimidation tactics, and eventual escape. The footage is expected to aid law enforcement authorities in their investigation.

Speaking to the media, Rizwan Irfan, a senior representative of the Electronics Dealers Association, expressed grave concern over the rising number of robberies targeting electronics and mobile phone retailers. He recalled that a similar robbery had recently occurred at a shop in Defence’s Khadda Market, pointing to a troubling pattern in the area.

Rizwan Irfan also confirmed that the suspects involved in the Badar Commercial heist had been apprehended in an injured condition following the incident. However, despite their arrest, the stolen goods have yet to be recovered. This has only deepened frustrations among local traders who say such incidents are becoming alarmingly common, and the lack of full recoveries adds to their financial losses and mental distress.

He emphasized that fear and insecurity are spreading among the business community in Karachi, particularly among shop owners in affluent areas that were once considered safe. The association now plans to take formal steps to address the issue, including raising the matter with the provincial home minister and senior law enforcement officials. Their goal is to secure better protection and a concrete strategy to curb the rising crime against businesses.

The latest robbery adds to a series of similar incidents that highlight a deteriorating security environment in one of the city’s prime commercial districts. With traders increasingly feeling vulnerable, the calls for more robust and visible policing are growing louder. As law enforcement agencies continue their probe, the business community is hoping for swift justice and stronger preventive measures to safeguard their livelihoods.
