Apple is planning the first significant redesign of the MacBook Pro since 2021, with the updated models expected to arrive in the final quarter of 2026 and bringing with them a thinner and lighter chassis, Organic Light-Emitting Diode displays, and, for the first time in the Mac’s history, touchscreen support. The report, attributed to Bloomberg, positions the upcoming MacBook Pro as one of the most substantive hardware updates in years, moving well beyond the incremental chip upgrades that have defined each annual iteration of the product since the last physical redesign half a decade ago.

The overhaul will feature M6 Pro and M6 Max processors built by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company on a 2nm manufacturing process, representing Apple’s most advanced silicon to date, while the display upgrade will bring Tandem Organic Light-Emitting Diode technology to the MacBook Pro, the same panel architecture Apple introduced on the iPad Pro in 2024, which delivers deeper blacks and more saturated colours than the miniLED panels currently used in the MacBook Pro lineup. The launch timeline in the fourth quarter of 2026 is tied in part to the readiness of Samsung Display’s new Organic Light-Emitting Diode production line, with Apple having delayed the redesign from its originally planned 2025 window due to challenges in display technology production.

Perhaps the most striking element of the upcoming MacBook Pro is the potential addition of touchscreen support, a feature Apple has resisted for nearly two decades despite its widespread adoption across competing Windows laptops, and one that would represent one of the biggest shifts in MacBook Pro history if confirmed. Apple is also investigating bringing cellular connectivity to the Mac for the first time, using its second-generation C2 modem, which would allow MacBook Pro users to connect to mobile networks directly without relying on a phone or external hotspot. On the physical design, the new models are expected to be thinner, though not dramatically so, with reports suggesting Apple has drawn clear lessons from the troubled 2016 to 2020 era of ultra-thin MacBook Pro models that sacrificed thermal performance, port selection, and keyboard reliability in pursuit of slimness.

Industry analysts have warned that the combination of Organic Light-Emitting Diode panels, thinner engineering, and advanced 2nm chip manufacturing could substantially increase production costs and potentially push MacBook Pro pricing several hundred dollars higher than current models, a concern that will weigh on Apple as it balances premium positioning with market accessibility in an increasingly competitive high-end laptop segment. Apple is expected to release updated M5-powered MacBook Pro models first, with the larger Organic Light-Emitting Diode touchscreen redesign arriving later in 2026 or potentially slipping into early 2027 depending on how production timelines develop.
