Aga Khan University (AKU) Karachi has announced the launch of the STEMx Advanced Life Sciences Programme, an immersive two-week educational initiative designed to engage young biologists in real-world research experiences. The programme, hosted by AKU’s Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences in collaboration with STEMx, aims to provide participants with a strong foundation in experimental research and lab-based learning under the supervision of experienced scientists. It is open to students aged 19 to 25 who are passionate about pursuing careers in biology, medicine, and biomedical innovation.

Scheduled to take place from December 29, 2025, to January 9, 2026, at the Aga Khan University campus in Karachi, the STEMx Advanced Life Sciences Programme will feature a structured flow divided into two key segments. The first week will focus on lab safety, procedures, and essential research methodologies, equipping students with the technical skills necessary for laboratory work. The second week will transition participants into supervised research projects, where they will apply their learning to active investigations within specialized areas of biomedical science. This hands-on approach aims to bridge the gap between academic study and professional research, providing students with valuable exposure to the realities of scientific inquiry.

The research projects in the programme will cover several critical themes, including Infection, Immunity and Inflammation, Neuroscience, Cardiometabolic Disorders, Diabetes, Obesity and Nutrition, Cancer and Stem Cell Biology, and Complementary Medicine. Each theme has been curated to reflect some of the most pressing areas of modern biomedical research, allowing participants to explore how science can address key health challenges in Pakistan and globally. By engaging in supervised research under the mentorship of AKU’s faculty, students will gain firsthand experience in hypothesis development, data analysis, and scientific presentation, preparing them for advanced studies and future careers in life sciences.

The collaboration between AKU and STEMx represents a growing commitment to nurturing Pakistan’s next generation of scientists and innovators. The programme’s structure not only emphasizes technical expertise but also encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and collaborative learning. Through this initiative, participants will work alongside established biomedical researchers, contributing to projects that reflect AKU’s mission of advancing scientific knowledge for societal benefit. By creating a platform for young researchers to explore cutting-edge topics in biomedical science, the STEMx Advanced Life Sciences Programme aims to strengthen Pakistan’s research ecosystem and inspire future contributions to global scientific discovery.
