Facebook organised an engaging webinar titled “Building Robust Urban Fiber Infrastructure in Pakistan” where industry leaders discussed the problems and opportunities associated to fibre connections. Speakers from Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), Telecom Infra Project (TIP), Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (ISPAK), and other industry players were among those on the panel.
All of the webinar participants had unique perspectives on why Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) has yet to realise its full potential in Pakistan’s urban areas. The presentation was educational because it focused on existing issues as well as the advantages of having higher-speed and higher-quality internet through optical fibre connections.
Guests and presenters discussed the challenges of not just installing fibre networks, but also managing infrastructure in major cities, villages, and remote places across the country. Vendors of fibre optic internet services were found to have to invest in and build their own cable infrastructure, which required a lengthy process.
Additionally, they must obtain approvals and licences from the relevant civil agencies in that area, as well as pay high taxes that deter internet service providers from investing in this domain. Not to mention the disruption to civilians when streets and roads are dug up all across the deployment regions.
We discovered that PTCL has opted to share its infrastructure with other vendors across the country in order to make doing business easier. This shared infrastructure model would lower the cost of doing business for industry while simultaneously providing convenience and access to high-quality internet, which is critical for our country’s economic growth.
The main focus of the webinar sessions was the strategic necessity of fulfilling the Digital Pakistan vision for the country’s economic growth and social uplift.
