The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSMA) and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) organised a workshop on the GSMA’s Mobile Connectivity Index (MCI) today at PTA Headquarters.
The goal of the workshop was to better Pakistan’s future MCI scores by understanding how indicators were evaluated and how efficiently PTA and other stakeholders can gather and share data with GSMA. The workshop’s main focus was the GSMA’s MCI.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), the Frequency Allocation Board (FAB), the Universal Service Fund (USF), the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training (MoFEPT), and mobile operators were among the organisations represented at the workshop. Senior PTA officers also took part in the workshop.
Member Compliance & Enforcement Dr. Khawar Siddique Khokhar stated during the opening remarks that PTA has always worked to provide accessible and cutting-edge services and technologies nationwide. In terms of providing and verifying telecom data, it closely collaborates with GSMA on MCI.
In the workshop, GSMA speakers discussed how connectivity can help create a more inclusive society and provided instructions for using the MCI. This was followed by an interactive session and participant discussion.
PTA Chairman Maj. General Amir Azeem Bajwa (R) noted that Pakistan’s overall MCI scores increased from 39.8 in 2019 to 43.9 in 2021 while speaking at the event. All four categories—infrastructure, affordability, consumer readiness, and content—have seen advancements in Pakistan.
A true representation of Pakistan’s MCI scores, according to him, will result from future problem areas identified in MCI being effectively addressed thanks to the workshop’s active participation of stakeholders. Additionally, the Chairman praised GSMA for organising the event.
