The University of the Punjab has launched an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot to assist prospective students with admissions and other university-related information, making it one of the leading public-sector universities in Pakistan to deploy such a tool for public-facing student support. The PU Admission Assistant Chatbot was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. M. Ali during a ceremony attended by Chairman Admission Committee Prof. Dr. Mahmood Saleem, Dean Faculty of Computing and Information Technology Prof. Dr. Shahzad Sarwar, deans of various faculties, and senior administrative officers.

The chatbot addresses a persistent challenge that prospective students and their families face during the admissions cycle: navigating a large, multi-campus university’s complex programme offerings, eligibility criteria, test schedules, and application procedures without readily accessible and accurate guidance. By deploying an artificial intelligence-based assistant that can respond to common queries in real time, the University of the Punjab has created a scalable support mechanism that can handle large volumes of student enquiries simultaneously, reducing the burden on administrative staff while improving the speed and consistency of information delivery to admission seekers across Pakistan.

Speaking at the inauguration, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. M. Ali appreciated the team for developing the chatbot in a short period, describing it as a commendable achievement. He further added that the university gives top priority to facilitating students and admission seekers, and directed that the chatbot facility should be extended to other departments as well. The directive to expand the chatbot beyond the admissions function signals the university’s intent to use this initial deployment as a foundation for broader artificial intelligence integration across its administrative and academic services, rather than treating it as a standalone experiment.

The launch of the PU Admission Assistant Chatbot comes at a time when Pakistan’s higher education sector is actively exploring how digital tools can improve access to information and reduce friction in the student journey from application through enrolment. With over 54,000 on-campus students across ten campuses and more than 220 undergraduate programmes, the University of the Punjab represents one of the most complex admissions environments in the country, making the deployment of an intelligent, always-available information tool a practically significant step forward. The chatbot’s introduction also positions the university as a reference point for other public-sector institutions considering similar implementations, demonstrating that artificial intelligence-powered student support is both achievable and operationally valuable within the constraints of a public university environment.
