Tecno presented a new modular smartphone concept during Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona, introducing a device designed around interchangeable hardware modules that can expand the phone’s capabilities. The concept device is notably thin, measuring approximately 4.9 millimeters, and in its basic form resembles a minimal smartphone frame equipped with a display, a simple camera module and four low profile pogo pin connectors. These connectors allow users to attach various modular components that can alter the device’s functionality. The design allows the phone to be customized through different hardware attachments, giving users the flexibility to configure the device based on their specific needs or preferences.

At its exhibition booth during the technology event, Tecno demonstrated multiple module families available in different color variants. Among the more prominent accessories was a large telephoto camera module that significantly extends the phone’s photographic capabilities. The telephoto module provides zoom capabilities of up to twenty times and includes manual focus functionality, though demonstrations suggested that the feature was still in development and occasionally experienced technical glitches. The module itself is considerably larger than the base phone and adds noticeable weight when attached. Tecno also showcased other camera accessories including ultrawide camera modules and a compact periscope telephoto attachment designed to offer improved optical zoom while maintaining a smaller physical profile.

Beyond photography, the modular ecosystem includes several experimental components intended to extend the phone’s communication and multimedia features. One attachment includes a foldable antenna that enables walkie talkie style communication, allowing users to send messages without relying on cellular networks or wireless internet connections. Other accessories demonstrated at the event included an attachable action camera that connects wirelessly to the device and can operate independently once detached. Depending on the module, connectivity between the phone and accessories is handled through technologies including Bluetooth and millimeter wave communication. Tecno also displayed additional modules such as lanyard connectors, grip clips and other experimental add ons designed to enhance usability.

The modular design also allows users to expand battery capacity by attaching additional battery packs. The base device includes a small internal battery due to its extremely thin design, although Tecno did not disclose the exact capacity. Demonstrations showed that users could attach multiple battery modules, each providing approximately 3,000 milliampere hours of capacity. Stacking several of these modules together could potentially increase the total battery capacity to around 10,000 milliampere hours, exceeding the capacity found in many mainstream smartphones. Notably, the concept device does not include a traditional Universal Serial Bus Type C charging port. Instead, charging is achieved by attaching a dedicated charging module to the phone’s connector interface, with the possibility of stacking additional modules on top.

While the concept attracted attention during the technology exhibition, Tecno has not indicated whether the modular smartphone will eventually reach commercial production. Modular smartphones have historically faced challenges in the consumer market due to complexity and limited ecosystem support. Earlier attempts by technology companies including Google and Motorola explored similar concepts but did not achieve widespread adoption. Tecno has previously introduced experimental devices at industry events, and it remains unclear whether this modular design will evolve into a consumer product. However, the concept highlights continued experimentation within the smartphone industry as manufacturers explore alternative approaches to device customization and hardware expansion.
