Subaru has taken the wraps off a significant addition to its electric vehicle lineup at the New York International Auto Show, introducing the 2027 Getaway as the brand’s first-ever three-row electric SUV. Built on Toyota’s e-TNGA platform, the same architecture underpinning the 2027 Toyota Highlander EV, the Getaway arrives as a family-oriented electric offering that pairs Subaru’s well-known all-wheel drive credentials with the practicality of a seven-seat cabin. All models in the initial launch will feature the company’s Symmetrical all-wheel drive system, 420 horsepower, and a native NACS-compatible charging port. Charging speeds are rated at an estimated 150kW, which Subaru says will take the battery from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 30 minutes, though this figure is somewhat modest compared to some competitors in the segment.
The first wave of Getaway models, arriving in late 2026 as 2027 vehicles, will carry a 95.8kWh battery pack delivering more than 300 miles of range on a single charge, along with a zero to 60 miles per hour time of under five seconds. The vehicle also includes preconditioning technology designed to maintain charging speeds in cold weather down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, a practical feature for buyers in harsher climates. A standard-range variant with a 77kWh battery and all-wheel drive is planned for release in the first half of 2027. Off-road capability has not been overlooked either; the Getaway offers 8.3 inches of ground clearance and Subaru’s X-Mode system with settings for Snow and Dirt, Deep Snow and Mud, Grip Control, and Downhill Assist, along with a tow rating of up to 3,500 pounds, making it a credible option for buyers who want electric practicality without sacrificing go-anywhere versatility.
Inside, the Getaway accommodates up to seven occupants via a second-row bench seat, with an optional six-seat configuration available through the addition of captain’s chairs in the second row. The infotainment system centers on a 14-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, complemented by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster for the driver. True to Subaru’s outdoor-leaning identity, the vehicle comes equipped with ladder-type roof rails on most trims, a choice of 19 or 20-inch wheels, and up to 45.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the third row folded, which Subaru claims surpasses the cargo capacity of the Kia EV9 in the same configuration. Heated front seats are included as standard, with ventilated seating for the first two rows and a heated steering wheel available on higher trim levels. Pricing and detailed trim information are expected to be disclosed closer to the official on-sale date later in 2026.
