Stranger Than Heaven is all about marching to the beat of a different snare drum, and nowhere is this clearer than in its combat revision. This is the first title from Ryu ga Gotoku Studio to focus on a combat system centred on the shoulder buttons. Swinging a fist as protagonist Makoto Daito requires the use of the shoulder buttons, with L1 and L2 for a southpaw swing or left leg poke and R1 and R2 for the main hand and right leg, with any of these buttons offering the option to charge up attacks as well. This frees up the player’s thumbs to dodge and block using the face buttons instead.
Back alley brawls in Stranger Than Heaven are all about pressing the advantage or taking a moment to catch your breath. Both Makoto and enemies alike have stamina that affects how responsive they are to attacks and the odds of getting knocked to the ground. For enemies, draining their stamina leaves them open to getting hit with a heavy counterattack that takes the place of your traditional Heat Moves from previous Yakuza titles. The replacement of Heat Moves, one of the most beloved mechanics in the franchise’s history, with a stamina-based counterattack system is a significant design statement, requiring players to build toward those powerful finishing moments through smart management of the stamina gauge rather than filling a dedicated Heat bar through offensive pressure alone.
The third combat encounter in the Summer Game Fest demo was the most memorable, a duel in the streets with a master swordsman willing to come after Makoto with everything he had. Given that Makoto doesn’t have armoured sleeves, blocking a sword slash still inflicts significant damage, so timely dodges are even more important than in standard encounters. Getting the swordsman’s health lower made him grow bolder with an unblockable grab attack that came out too quickly to react to if you didn’t know it was coming, meaning getting knocked to the ground and taking 60 percent health damage became a real risk if you tried to counter rather than sidestep, introducing a level of combat dynamism more demanding than what typical Like a Dragon encounters require.
The Stranger Than Heaven demo available at Summer Game Fest 2026 was solely focused on combat across three distinct periods of Japanese history, with no side quests or diversions. The main playable character and deuteragonist are named Makoto Daito and Yu Shinjo, with the game clearly building toward a story that spans approximately fifty years of Japanese history through its five distinct eras. Stranger Than Heaven will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S and X as a day-one Game Pass title, and PC on January 15, 2027.
