Shaza Fatima, Alibaba Discuss Strengthening Pakistan’s Digital Trade and Global E-Commerce Ties

Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja met with James Dong, President of Alibaba International Markets, to discuss expanding Pakistan’s role in global digital commerce and strengthening bilateral cooperation in the e-commerce space. The meeting underscored shared interests in building a resilient and innovative digital trade ecosystem that benefits local businesses and opens new international channels for Pakistani entrepreneurs.

During the discussion, both sides explored pathways to enhance collaboration between the government and Alibaba’s international operations, with a specific focus on empowering small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), improving cross-border trade logistics, and introducing cutting-edge digital tools to support e-commerce growth. Shaza Fatima emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to fostering an inclusive digital economy where local vendors and businesses can access global markets through established platforms such as Alibaba.

The conversation also addressed the need to scale up capacity-building initiatives in Pakistan’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Shaza Fatima highlighted the importance of integrating local businesses into digital platforms that offer international visibility and access to diversified markets. By leveraging Alibaba’s infrastructure and global reach, Pakistan aims to equip its digital workforce and e-commerce sellers with the tools and knowledge to compete more effectively in the global marketplace.

James Dong provided insights into Alibaba’s initiatives across emerging economies and reaffirmed the company’s interest in deepening its engagement with Pakistan. He expressed confidence in the country’s potential, citing its young population, evolving digital infrastructure, and growing number of tech-savvy entrepreneurs. He added that strategic collaboration with Pakistan’s Ministry of IT and Telecom could further accelerate digital trade and bring lasting value to small businesses across the country.

Both parties discussed frameworks for joint efforts in digital training, seller onboarding, and policy alignment to support digital commerce innovation. Alibaba’s expertise in global e-commerce logistics and digital payments is seen as an asset for countries like Pakistan looking to fast-track economic integration with international markets.

Shaza Fatima also reiterated the ministry’s policy focus on enabling digital inclusion and economic opportunity through partnerships that support innovation and export potential. She acknowledged the role of platforms like Alibaba in unlocking untapped potential in Pakistan’s remote and underserved regions by connecting local producers and artisans with buyers worldwide.

The meeting reflects the government’s ongoing strategy to strengthen digital trade, create jobs, and attract investment by aligning with global technology players. Through closer collaboration with multinational e-commerce companies, Pakistan aims to build a more connected and competitive digital economy that supports sustainable growth and entrepreneurship.

The engagement between Alibaba and the Ministry of IT and Telecom is expected to result in actionable steps to boost trade facilitation, expand the e-commerce ecosystem, and support local businesses in scaling operations through digital platforms. Further engagements are expected to formalize specific programs focused on skills development, technology transfer, and international market access.
